PREPARING FOR A CONSULTATION

Care planning questions

A useful conversation starts with the details of your current arrangements. Use these questions to identify what you would like to clarify.

Before boarding or temporary care

Which animals need care, and what routines and handling considerations should a prospective provider understand? What existing veterinary instructions, owner contacts and emergency arrangements need to be available? Confirm the provider, location, accepted species and availability directly before making arrangements.

Feeding instructions and supplies

Where are the current feeding instructions kept, and can each carer follow them? How are supplies labelled, completed tasks recorded and changes or shortages communicated? Individual diets, supplements and clinical nutrition decisions require appropriate professional advice.

Daily observations

What does each carer record, where are notes kept and who follows up a reported change? How can relevant observations reach the responsible person and the animal’s veterinary practice? Records support communication; they do not diagnose illness or replace veterinary advice.

Sharing responsibilities

Who is responsible for each task, and what information does the next carer need? Which decisions require the owner’s agreement, and who should be contacted if circumstances change? A handover discussion can help identify unclear instructions and responsibilities.

Agreeing what is needed

Describe the question you want to resolve and the information already available. You may want to discuss the structure of a checklist, observation log or handover record. These are discussion topics, not a promised package of written deliverables. Suitability, scope, fees and arrangements must be agreed before proceeding.
